If you have a lot of luggage, we recommend that you take a taxi to the airport, approximately a 30-minute ride. Airport-City buses operated by the company “Jasper” regularly leave from Hauptbahnhof and Altona train stations. The S-Bahn from Ohlsdorf takes one station to the Airport.

FRONT DOOR
The front door is self-locking. From the inside, open it by pressing down on the door-handle; from the outside, it can only be opened with a key. If the door falls shut, it will lock automatically. For security reasons there is no buzzer in the apartments for opening the front door. To let your visitors in, please go to the front door in person. For your own security and that of your fellow residents, we urgently request that you do not let anyone into the house unless you know them personally.

JOGGING
The most popular and nearest jogging trail is that around the Außenalster (7,4 km, 4,60 m), which you can reach via Johnsallee and Alte Rabenstraße. The “Planten un Blomen” park behind Dammtor station is also a good place to jog.

LAUNDRY ROOM
The in-house laundry room is located in the cellar (basement) of the Gästehaus. To do your laundry, exit the building and go to the right, to the cellar stairs. The cellar door may be opened with your front door key, the laundry-room (metal door) is straight ahead. Each thirty minute washing and drying cycle cost about € 0,50.
For example one load could cost between € 1,50 and € 2,00 depending on the length of the cycle. Please use 50 Cent coins.

The Weltweite Wissenschaft Foundation regularly hosts talks and lectures at the Gästehaus, to which you are herewith warmly invited. REGISTRATION and LANDLORD CONFIRMATION
Your host institute may request that you register with the authorities upon arrival and give notification of your departure at the end of your stay. Please see the enclosed leaflet on “Registration and Landlord confirmation”.
REPAIRS
The custodians will take care of minor repairs in your apartment, in the hallways and the stairways twice a week. The office will call in a workman if necessary.
RESTAURANTS
There are a number of restaurants of varying ethnic backgrounds dotted around the campus (Rothenbaumchaussee, Schlüterstraße, Grindelhof, Mittelweg); most of them have lunch specials.

SHOPPING
There are grocers, drugstores, stationers, gift stores etc. within walking distance in the university district (Grindelallee / Grindelhof / Schlüterstrasse area). Downtown Hamburg may also be reached on foot (via Dammtor, head towards Gänsemarkt) or by S-Bahn (Richtung Hauptbahnhof). Bus no. 5 or no. 4 will take you from Dammtor to Rathausmarkt and on to Hauptbahnhof. Shops in the city centre as well as some of the shops in the university district (such as the Spar supermarket on Hallerstrasse / Rothenbaumchaussee) are open until 8:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, and some are open until 8:00 p.m. on Saturdays as well. All shops are closed on Sundays and bank holidays (except the ones inside Hauptbahnhof and Dammtor train stations).

UNIVERSITY
Attached you will find a map of the University. The Gästehaus is immediately adjacent to the campus, and is shown as Building No. 43. The University Schedule of Lectures (Vorlesungsverzeichnis) – which may be viewed in the Gästehaus foyer (lobby) and at your institute, or purchased in bookstores – is a veritable goldmine of information on the University administration, institutes, libraries, lectures and much more. VISITORS
In the larger apartments, you may choose to have a visitor. Please let the house management know when your guest is arriving and the length of their stay. You will be given an extra set of linens and towels. Please refer to your registration form for the price of an extra bed.
WEEKLY MARKET
Each Thursday from 8.30 a.m. – 2.00 p.m., a weekly market is held in Turmweg. Also each Saturday from 8.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m. a weekly market is held at the Rothenbaumchaussee 64, directly in front of the museum of ethnology. They sell fresh products, flowers and much, much more. Well worth a visit.
A weekly market with organic produce and products is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8.30 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. at Spritzenplatz square in Ottensen. Take the S 11 or S 31 from Dammtor to Altona train station, then cross the Ottenser Hauptstraße towards Spritzenplatz.
